Laparoscopy is an endoscopic technique that allows viewing of the pelvic-abdominal cavity with the help of an optical tube. Through an optical fiber through the side light is transmitted to illuminate the cavity, whereas we look at the pictures of the inside with a camera connected to the same fiber.
The same method is surgery, so it is also considered a minimally invasive surgery aimed at cure or correct disease. The instrument used is called a laparoscope and enters the body through a small incision between two and five centimeters.
That the access port is small does not mean it's risk free because you have access to vital organs can be damaged.
Virtually all abdominal and pelvic surgery can be performed through this technique, between some of them have cholecystectomies, appendectomies, bowel resection, surgical sterilization and pancreatectomy.
Among several advantages of laparoscopic surgery on traditional open surgery are the smaller size of the incision with consequent better cosmetic effect, lower postoperative pain and generally a faster recovery of patients and shorter hospital stay.
For the practice of these techniques the surgeon in charge must have good experience with the use of laparoscopy and a solid position is very similar although not exactly like to do different operations with bare hands.
